The Occupational Medicine Clinic at BNL has a unique opportunity for a per-diem Fitness Professional to perform Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) for a variety of positions at BNL. In addition, the ideal candidate will manage and administer a Health-Related Fitness Program for BNL firefighters in compliance with National Fire Protection Association Standard 1583 (firefighter fitness standard).

  • Note: This is a per diem part-time position with weekly work hours of approximately 8 hours per week (2-3 mornings per week) on-site at the Lab in Upton, NY.

  • Perform Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) as a component of pre-placement/pre-employment evaluations and fitness-for-duty evaluations.
  • Administer annual firefighter fitness evaluations, develop fitness prescriptions to improve firefighter fitness.
  • Train and oversee “peer fitness trainers” (firefighters who may choose to volunteer to assist their peers in their respective fitness programs)
  • Under the direction of the physicians and NP of BNL's Occupational Medicine Clinic, design individualized exercise and fitness training programs for firefighters returning to work after an extended absence due to a debilitating injury, illness, or other health issue, with the goal of restoring the firefighter’s fitness and job performance to an optimal level
  • Maintain statistical records of program participants including summary statistics for the group and trending of individual firefighters' fitness measures over time.
  • Give presentations/demonstrations to firefighters on fitness, conditioning, stretching, exercise arid overall health.
  • Perform pre-placement fitness screens of candidates for firefighter and other physically demanding jobs at BNL
  • Bachelors degree or graduate degree (Masters, Doctorate) in a health and fitness field, including Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or Physical Therapy
  • A minimum of 2 years of contemporary full-time, directly related work experience performing fitness assessments and guiding individuals in achieving improved levels of fitness, preferably in an occupational setting
  • Excellent teamwork, interpersonal, and teaching skills and be motivated to serve as an active member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to work in a diverse and international community

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Training and certification as a Personal Trainer, Health and Fitness Instructor, Exercise Specialist or Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by a nationally recognized professional organization, including the American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, National Strength and Conditioning Association or National Academy of Sports Medicine
  • Experience and confidence working with firefighters/public safety officers
  • Experience with weight management programs and/or collaboration with dieticians to help individuals achieve weight loss goals
  • Expertise with electronic health records, spreadsheets, databases, statistical software, descriptive statistics, and summary report writing
